One Detroit and the Detroit Economic Club partner to examine placemaking and urban design in Detroit
As major cities like Detroit seek to mitigate losses and return with a pattern of growth, the importance of mixed-use developments is at the forefront of revival to ensure a city can attract businesses and employees for the future of work. It’s becoming critical to apply thoughtful urban design practices to these developments and encourage company engagement within the city as a way to redefine working downtown.
Join us for a Future of Work town hall at noon Wednesday, April 19 to explore how thoughtful urban design may help metro Detroit’s vibrancy return to pre-pandemic levels.
One Detroit contributors Stephen Henderson, host of American Black Journal, and Nolan Finley, editorial page editor of the Detroit News, sit down with special guests Matt Rossetti, the CEO and president of ROSSETTI, and Amy Chesterton, an urban planning partner with ROSSETTI to talk about the status of placemaking in Detroit.
Our co-hosts and panelists discuss the value of adding high-quality public spaces around Detroit, innovative work-live models where homes, offices and amenities all reside in the same building, the strategies other major metropolitan areas are using to attract new businesses, and ultimately what employees want to get out of work and the places they live.
This conversation was produced in partnership with the Detroit Economic Club. Stephen Henderson, Host, American Black Journal; One Detroit contributor
Stephen Henderson is the current host of American Black Journal, WDET’s Detroit Today and former Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial page editor of The Detroit Free Press. A Detroit native, Henderson is a graduate of University of Detroit Jesuit High School and the University of Michigan. He has worked previously as a reporter, editorial writer and editor at the Baltimore Sun, the Chicago Tribune and the Knight Ridder Washington bureau, where he covered the Supreme Court from 2003-2007.
Henderson’s work has been honored with more than a dozen national awards, including for work that is published in the book, “Best Newspaper Writing 2001.” Henderson connects to readers and viewers with perspective and passionate opinion. Follow Stephen on Twitter @SHDetroit.
Nolan Finley, Editorial Page Editor, Detroit News; One Detroit contributor
Nolan Finley is Editorial Page Editor of The Detroit News, a position he’s held since May 1, 2000. He directs the expression of the newspaper’s editorial position on various national and local issues and also writes a column in the Thursday and Sunday newspapers. Prior to that, Finley was the newspaper’s Deputy Managing Editor, directing the newsroom. Previously, he served as Business Editor, and in various editing positions on the city, state and metro desks. He was also a reporter, covering Detroit City Hall during the Coleman Young administration.
Finley has been with the newspaper since 1976, starting as a copy boy in the newsroom while a student at Wayne State University. Nolan also co-hosts One Detroit show on Detroit Public Television and often appears on Flashpoint on WDIV. He is a graduate of both Schoolcraft College in Livonia and Wayne State, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in journalism. Follow Nolan on Twitter @NolanFinleyDN.
Matt Rossetti, Chief Architect of Serious Fun, ROSSETTI
As a third-generation architect, Matt’s design education and training were instrumental in different ways to provide macro and micro experiences. He adopted the practice of ‘serious fun,’ an expression that integrates intense design rigor with a unifying, collegial process.

Amy Chesterton, Urban Planning Partner, ROSSETTI
Amy Chesterton is an urban planning partner with ROSSETTI. She has experience leading strategic real estate development, mixed-use districts, urban infill, adaptive reuse, institutional, and strategic planning projects.
Her creative, grounded approach ensures plans and initiatives are implementable with widespread community support.
